The Chequers Story in a Timeline
We’ve come a long way since 2022 when a few of the existing committee came together, dismayed at the thought that The Chequers Inn might be teetering on the point of extinction….
Winter 2022/23
The Chequers Inn is a shadow of its former self but a few individuals aren’t going to rest until it’s back open – and have some ideas about how to do this.
May 2023
A village meeting is called to discuss the way forward and proposes a community pub model is a good way forward
August 2023
Campaign launched to amass pledges for a community pub buy-out
December 2023
Community Ownership Fund applied for and awards the Society £276k on the strength of our business plan and community pledges
March 2024
A Share Offer is launched to turn those pledges into shareholdings – so we can achieve our common dream
April 2024
The Society buys The Chequers on behalf of the Community
July 2024
We launch a second share offer to bring forward building the disabled toilet and baby change facility to great success
August 2024
We celebrate completing the garden facelift that the community and local businesses have created led ably by Ian Wren
October 2024
“Cheers to The Chequers!” event held with guest speakers from all over the world and celebrating the history of the pub – with an eye on the next new chapter!
November 2024
The volunteer community upped their game to help prep, decorate, clean and preen the pub!
December 2024
With main parts of the refurbishment of the pub complete, we held two pop-up nights – one for Volunteers and another open to all on Christmas Eve night
Ending with the lights firmly switched BACK ON for Christmas 2024.….Hooray for the Chequers Inn!!
Into 2025….
