We are happy to announce we will be holding a pop-up pub event on Christmas Eve at The Chequers.
This brings together a year of hard graft – from the share offer at the start of the year, to the renovation work that has been ongoing since April and the ongoing community spirit of all the volunteers that have helped bring The Chequers back to life.
Check out the Chequers themed Christmas Tree (note those paintbrushes) we exhibited at the Christmas Tree Festival in Writtle at the start of the month!
What a ride! We have ALL worked hard to make this happen in time for Christmas.
We want to ensure you can all have the opportunity to celebrate Christmas Eve in the pub with your neighbours to round off 2024 – and it’s with this vision we are holding a special event. To manage everyone’s expectations though – the renovation has extended right up to Christmas and there are still a few loose ends that need finishing off, please do not expect a fully finessed pub or service offer just yet. For example, we haven’t yet completed the full interior look with all the bells and whistles, there might be some bits of paintwork that need finishing and we’ll be offering a simple pay bar only (no food or spirits yet). But it will be a very special opportunity to enjoy a drink in the pub with your neighbours at Christmas.
As we expect the limited opening times to increase the crowds – entry will be strictly by tickets obtained in advance to keep the event safe and manageable. We will be hosting three sessions on Christmas Eve to allow as many people as possible to attend:
- 5pm to 7pm (family friendly session, with accompanied children welcome)
- 7pm to 9pm (age 16+ only)
- 9pm to 11pm (age 16+ only)

We are hosting another session on Sunday evening for the volunteers that have worked so hard on the renovation to celebrate their hard work (if you have volunteered but not heard about this through the Volunteers WhatsApp Group, please let us know). We will then be taking a breather over the Christmas period before holding more pop-up events in the New Year until a professional tenant is appointed.
The Management Committee of the Roxwell Chequers Community Benefit Society hope to see you on Christmas Eve. We wish all our shareholders, sponsors and the wider community a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2025!
